The Irish Medical Times blog says:
A common-sense idea to reduce drink driving was made at the Irish Medical Organisation’s AGM recently, but it got no media attention: seize the cars of drunk drivers.
I love it. In fact I love anything that punishes drunk drivers. I love this especially though because of the revenue generating aspect of it. Take their cars and sell them on, making money for the State. The thought process is also wonderful: If I am caught drink driving tonight, I will loose my car. That stings even the drunken mind.
The Irish Medical Times blog points to the example of New York in 1999 where the policy was introduced.

Show me one social event in Ireland which is not involved our over indulgence of Alcohol?
If want to meet a girl you have to go to pub get pissed (vice versa)? After Work?
After Communion? After/Before/during any match? If you are dumped? If That guy/girl is having relationship problems? Just any excuse…
Our love with Alcohol will not go away until we change our attitude social gatherings all together.
It’s a good idea, but it’s not enough. Why don’t we seize the cars of idiots who can’t drive?
I know it would be controversial, but we could also consider seizing the cars of very old people and drivers with hats.
