8 Mile was on TV last night. I didn’t watch it. But I did start to think about Irish Hip Hop. Which is very much alive.

8 mile let us all in on battling, in which rappers try to out slag each other to a beat. For the uninitiated, this is a style of freestyle rap. Here’s some recorded battling sessions from Irishhiphopdotcom: (Which contains, surprisingly, bad language)

Poke a little bit around irishhiphop.com, and you come up against this video, in which emcee Kounter Kulture talks all about culture, subculture and counterculture, eventually tying it in with the future of Irish hiphop. I had no idea there was so much to it. (It’s 24 minutes long.)

There’s certainly a lot of them: Irish Hip Hop on myspace. Irish Hip Hop on bebo.

That’s really cool - interesting to see how they’re doing it. For a great community dance site though take a look at http://www.diddlyi.com - who knew it was possible to get so excited about irish dancing?
