It’s about fixing potholes

Fixing potholes still gets TDs elected to the Dáil, a new book claims today.
‘The Irish Voter’, written by four university academics, claims to be the biggest-ever study of its kind on behaviour at the ballot boxes.
It includes a major survey of 2,500 people on their voting behaviour in the 2002 General Election.
Co-author Michael Marsh said: “Politicians are professionals. They know what gets them elected and it’s not performing in the Dáil. It’s fixing potholes. It’s knocking on doors.”

It’s a small thing, but it can have a huge difference on a patch of local road around here.
Plus it’s just about the only thing Longford’s backbenchers could achieve.
That and turning up to your Uncle’s wife’s grandaunt’s niece’s son’s funeral a week before the elections.
I think the good politician has the knack of running with the fox and riding with the hounds. He’d be more inclined to go to the funeral of a person with a large family than that of a small one. The large family has more connections, more in-laws and blood is thicker than water. The good politician with attend funerals whethre its an election year or not, and it’s not unknown for him or her to travel to the funeral of a stranger (albeit a party member) in a constituency far far away.
