RTE Embed

This is just a technology proof of concept. RTE are short sighted in their uptake of technology… it’s taking them too long to move from Realplayer to YouTube.
If they’re determined to stick with realplayer, they should at least consider the option of an embed, like what is hacked together below. In theory this would allow you to embed RTE content onto your own web site, ala the Youtube embeddable player.
(Might work better opened in a new window.)
That took me about 40 mins to write and sort of works. If RTE took about a weeks worth of development time they could have an embeddable player with their ads popping up before play time. It’s a no-brainer, the vast increase in hits, the extra ad revenue, it’s all sitting there to be taken.
Or, alternatively, just kill realplayer, (it sucks) and become a youtube partner, saving gazillion billions in costs and reap the benefits of a global audience. If they’re determined not to go down that path, they should at least move to a flash platform, dragging themselves right up to only a couple of years out of date. It’s pathetic that their ads play in flash and then there’s a transition to real player / WMV.
Disclaimer: I do not think the embed should really be used by anybody. It doesn’t really work anyway!

good idea.. works ok..
rte use realplayer as it is for live streaming.. it is much easier to serve video at different bitrates using realplayer (ie for people with bad connections). as realplayer is doing this, it creates an archive file which i guess is handy for them to place on the site. it would be easy enough to have a server convert these files to other formats like flv for youtube and the likes and mp4 for itunes.
so it makes sense for them to use realplayer for live shows.. sure technology is there now to use flash for live streams too and has been for a while.. but i can only imagine how many departments a decision like this would have to go through at rte. they adopted realplayer early on and it works for them.. much harder to rip too.
theres more to webvideo than youtube!
Many thanks!
I’ve been looking for a way to embed a clip from RTE onto our website at http://www.ummera.com for months!
Thanks to Damien Mulley for his link to you.
Up and running - and working despite your disclaimer!
I had to put in a couple of line breaks and change the size a little in your coding, but otherwise - brilliant!
“It’s a no-brainer”
Yeah, but the Powers That Be in RTÉ have no brains. I can’t think of any other site, in the WORLD, that’s still using RealPlayer.
Wasn’t the BBC still using RealPlayer, like 5 minutes ago?
I expect RTÉ will follow suit; they usually do.

The BBC do use realplayer, but they also have alternatives, Windows media player for live streaming for example
not to mention they have several youtube channels.
I did some hackyslashy with the basic smil files a year or two back for clips where I just wanted particular pieces of programs to embed on the blog. It worked but I gave up the will to live after a while. This is a much better alternative, you’re think RTe would want us watching their stuff.
all we now is a preview and or and a quick way to screen grab RP
I tried to embed an timed rte clip ala dan sullivan advice and it didn’t work, could you make you script except this kind of link too.
i just put in an rte link and then changed the url afterwards
