The Dustin poster image: Making the rounds

The anti-Lisbon treaty Dustin poster, which was originally posted here. It looks like it appeared in The Irish Times today in their Lisbon treaty digest, compiled by Mary Fitzgerald. It appeared in The Irish Independent yesterday. No credit given in both cases.

Fucking pricks. The paper of record is now ripping off bloggers to cut costs. Invoice them.
I’m sorry - but I don’t see the issue here.
In your original post you said the poster was “Seen at the corner of Dawson St and Nassau St in Dublin”.
As I understand it, Dawson St. and Nassau St are public streets.
Busy public streets.
Busy public streets which many people walk down.
People with eyes.
Eyes which see things.
Things like posters.
How many people do you think might have seen this thing since it was put up?
In any case, do you think is there a chance that the person who actually devised the poster might be a little pissed off that you used an image of their poster without permission? Admittedly there are no discernible artist details on it - but just because they are not there doesn’t mean they consent to you using it on your blog.
Talk about narccistic!
*Sigh* … it’s the fact that they nabbed it and didn’t credit where they got it.
*Sigh*… I know what the perceived sleight it. I’m just not sure its entirely relevant.
How do you know they got it at JazzBiscuit.com?
How do you know some IT/Indo employee didn’t snap the image themselves?
Even if it was taken from your site:
How do you know some freelance photographer didn’t swipe it and, passing it off as their own, sell it on without demanding a credit.
How do you know somebody didn’t copy the picture from your site and email it (with no link to your blog) to a friend, who might in turn have sent to their friends and so on until it ended up the the inbox of some IT staffer? With no way of knowing where it came from (in much the same way you don’t know who created the poster) how can you reasonably expect them to credit anybody?
The Independent/Times used a PHOTOGRAPH, taken by Jazz Biscuit, without permission, credit or payment, you plank. Which one of the papers do you work for Stipey?
Your correct. I give in. All valid points.
I guess it’s just a courtesy… I think it would have been nice to have gotten a credit, given the non-commercial nature of jazz biscuit etc. Obviously if they didn’t get it from here then that’s all good.
Ok now we’re just confusing people.
Out of sequence comments are.
The point is JB that Indo and Times are commercial in nature and it’s also doing a professional photographer out of a sale when they’re ripping stuff from the blogses.
If they took the actual photo, its bad form.
As I said over on Green Ink, I thought my celebrity Magazine / Ziggy Channelle Photo had been ripped off by the Tribune, but on closer inspection it was a different shot of the same thing. i did have to arrange the two magazines to get exact juxtaposition, they could have seen it too.
I have no opinion on this.
Vote Yes
Have a nice day now . .
I work for neither paper. In fact I work for no media organisations of any kind.
Interesting though that you assume my suggestions that their might be an alternative explanation (or even an alternative photo) as being driven by some ulterior motive, forced upon me by “The Man”.
I abhor this type of thing as much as the next person - I just thought the vitriol (”fucking pricks”) was not entirely proportionate to the alleged offence.
I don’t want to know what men are forcing on your ulterior.
Good point… Well made!
I did try to think of of an equally juvenile retort - honest I did.
It’s just, the best I could come up with was “Well I know you are - but what am I?” - and I felt that would be far too sophisticated for the situation.
Should we not just get on with it and bring on the hitler comparisons.
Nah, I’m leaving it there.
I wasn’t looking for a never-ending, no-winners, internet row (you know what they say about arguing on the internet).
Look, If they swiped your image without giving due credit then that is, without question, poor form.
I was just making the point that I saw some differences between this (a poster that is in a public place, for a prolonged period of time, for all the world to see) and the type of plagiarism that has happened to RedMum and Rebba (a very specific, one-off, single-moment-in-time type picture). I just think there is a reasonable chance that the image was used innocently)
OK then.
Jeez, there’s always one asshole who takes the time to tell you “I’m sorry - but I don’t see the issue here”. I wonder how many words you post when you do see the issue
Although the papers might have been kind enough to credit you, life’s too short, Jazz, to get worked up about this. Did you get permission to use the image that was composed by some poor photographer/artist living in a garret.
Bloggers should not complain too much about newspapers lifting the odd morsel, as bits and pieces from papers are constantly turning up on web sites.
I think many news people don’t understand the blogger’s attitude, because nabbing material is meat and drink to them. Once news is published it is out there to be taken. Of course commentary is a different story, but even opinions are often recycled.
Is it plagiarism to steal someone else’s joke? I am not sure.
Shakespeare was a great man for stealing other peoples story lines. God knows, if he was knocking out Hamlet in 2008, he’d have some blogging fusspot saying “Oi. That Hamlet. That was my story.”
Congrats on the web site.
It’s the most convincing No campaign poster I’ve seen.
Are you telling me that I’d now have to pay my hard earned 1 euro for news I read on blogs the day before?
