Raffling off an apartment

KEEP THIS COUPON
Photo owned by striatic (cc)

A boardsie wants to sell raffle tickets via ebay with the winner getting his 1 bedroom apartment:

Hi im doin some research at the minute in relation to raffling off my apartment and am wondering how much interest there would be in buying a ticket -

The Raffle - The raffle will consist of tickets being sold on EBAY where a buyer purchases a ticket number betweeen 1 and “the final number of tickets to be sold, lets say 50,000 for arguments sake”. Each ticket will be €5-10 each. The raffle itself will have legal documents drawn up by my own solicitor and all terms and conditions will be attached to the ebay purchase. The raffle will be held by a official adjudicator on line and a date will be attached to ebay for the raffle to take place so people can log on and watch the winning ticket being pulled.

The rules - It is my intention that a min number of tickets will need to be sold for the raffle to go ahead (again this will be mentioned on ebay). I these tickets are not sold then all moneys will be refunded via paypal.

Profit - It is not my intention to make profits on this raffle however advertising, tax, gaming licence costs etc will need to be covered within the number of tickets sold. The number of tickets been sold will be decided on ebay agreement therefore the buyer knows their odds will not vary i.e odds of 1 in 50k and not 1 in infinity.

Reason - Recession and dont want to sell apartment at a loss which in the current market is more than likely.

The Prize - The winner will be pulled out on the date mentioned on the ebay purchase. That person will then be handed over the deeds to a 1bedroom luxury apartment in a highly sought after location in dublin. That person will be mortgage free. That person will have spent no more than the charge of purchasing the ebay ticket.

Other posters are pointing out the dubious legality of his proposition.

Garfield minus Garfield: The Book

Garfield minus Garfield
, created by 33 year old Irish man Dan Walsh, is to spawn a book. Press release snip:

NEW YORK, NY – July 30, 2008 – Paws, Inc. and Ballantine Books, a division of the Random House Publishing Group, announced last week at Comic-Con International that Ballantine will publish a book inspired by the popular webcomic Garfield Minus Garfield.

Garfield Minus Garfield (www.garfieldminusgarfield.net) made its online debut in February 2008 and quickly became an online sensation based on a simple premise: What would Jim Davis’ Garfield comic strip be like without its lasagna-loving fat cat? Without the presence of Garfield and other characters such as Odie the dog and Nermal the kitten, the strips “create a new, even lonelier atmosphere for Jon Arbuckle…Jon’s observations seem to teeter between existential crisis and deep despair.” (New York Times)

The full-color book format will give readers the experience of having both the original and doctored Garfield strips together on the same page for comparison. Dublin, Ireland-based Garfield Minus Garfield creator Dan Walsh will provide the foreword to the book.

Cool. Full press release at travors.com.

Though I’d bet that it’s not made by Guinness.

Anyone know the origin of this? Presume it’s an ad agency just showing off their skillz ala the infamous Volkswagen Tough.

Boards.ie: Ten years of data

10 years of boards.ie data has been released and they’re running a competition for people to come up with the most interesting ways of using the data.

Suggestions:
Plot the emergence of the phrase ‘I’m not racist but‘ over time. Or a simple count of the number of times your ma has been said on the site. (Google’s result of 2,720 seems low.) Something similar to the stats created based off of 5 years of Boing Boing data would be good.

Fly, fly Ryanair

Why is everyone stabbing Ryanair in the face now that they’re (for once) not doing astronomically well? Ryanair profits fall by 85% and they drop a whole bunch of routes and change strategy, and half the country is saying ‘Hah! The Bastards!’

What the fuck? It’s as if now that things aren’t great, we’re delighting in things getting worse. How utterly predictable. Maybe we’d all be happier if we got aids.
