Shane Hegarty’s war on surveys as news

Tags: , , ,

Shane Hegarty’s column in last Saturday’s Irish Times Weekend Review was fantastic stuff. We can link to it, despite the Irish Times ridiculous pay-wall, thanks to the fact that Shane reproduces his Saturday column on his blag. A snip:

IF YOU picked up a copy of Metro or Herald AM on your way to work on Wednesday morning, you would have learned this stunning statistic: almost half of women love doing the washing-up.

What’s more, 70 per cent dream of a pampering experience, such as a spa break or a manicure, as they are doing the washing-up.

And who brought you this vital research? Fairy washing-up liquid.

Read it: The Percentage Game.

As if to make his point for him, he also points to more survey results that arrived in today: Dumb survey of the day.

As is now required for any mention of Irish Times columns:

Get rid of the Irish Times paywall

It’s a Jazz shaped interweb

  1. Shiny new techo-blag IrishGeeks.com has got itself a make over and was well worth checking out before the make over but now that it’s had the make over it’s still worth checking out, purple monkey dishwasher.
  2. The Chancer, (we love them, we’re hoping they’ll ask us out.) rules the roost with their caption competitions, of which Jazz Biscuit just can’t help contributing.
  3. The Irish Times super blagger Shane Hegarty comments on the launch of a new Humanist magazine, wondering why they couldn’t have got a better title.
  4. And finally, a bit of a techy one, but on new blag Contrast, (from Irish ultra-web-designer Eoghan McCabe), states the obvious and points out that Search Engine Optomisation is bullshit, and creates a comment storm.
