Hit up (thats right) Wood quay this Saturday and Sunday and get down with skateborders, parkour-ers and all kinds of generation z+1′ers. It’s free. I’ve seen a few of these hoods practicing around the city dog, and they were hella-cool.

Darragh Doyle has a big post up about it, or just check out their myspace or Bebo for more info.

Here’s a parkour tutorial:

Korn Junkies and Blind Date in Dublin

The students, they are making the films.

Art imitating life: I just snorted a load of Alpen. The raisins are difficult but you get used to it.

That 2 minute 38 second slow motion coda after the film had made it’s point… when we watch poor Michael’s dignity slip away until the manic depressive smile kicks in at the end as he cracks - was that really necessary? YouTube videos with raw emotional power? You betcha.

F1 in schools

Tags: , , , ,

The winners of the F1 in schools 2008 final was the Koni Kat’s from The National F1 in Schools St David’s Secondary School, Greystones Co. Wicklow. F1 in schools, sponsored by Honda and the Irish Computer Society challenges school kids to build and race little model CO2 powered cars. Like these:

The winners website is here, where they show the details of the design and construction of the car. They’ll be going off to represent Ireland in the 2009 world championships. Great stuff.

Data protection Ireland: The youtube competition

Did you know the data protection commissioner was running a competition on youtube? They won’t let us embed their instructions for the competition.

Check out this page on the data protection web site for more information.

My favourite entry that I’ve seen is John and 21st Century Privacy:

While entries like this:

are absolutely excellent, John and 21st Century Privacy wins hands down for me so far.

The entries are coming in, including this one:

A short drama highlighting some of the issues with social networking amongst young people in Ireland today

That’s right kids. Use Bebo enough and you could become giant walking computer screens like the above. And drink Bavaria. Like true superheroes.

By the standard of the videos I’m guessing some film schools have gotten wind of this jazz, which is great.

Anyway, a government agency doing something proactive to get the kids interested in an important issue? I’ll let everyone else come up with reasons why they suck ass. I think this rocks. Closing date is the 30th April, so still time to shoot your masterpiece.

Are you up for it?

Are you up for it?

Well. Are you? AreYouUpForIt.ie, is a new web site aimed at getting Irish kids interested in technology careers. It’s poochieness is off the scale, but hey it’s for a good cause so let’s give it a chance.

It has all sorts of positive info on technology, and some good profiles of successful technology types on it’s champions page, and the future predictor is sufficiently bebo-quiz like to keep their rapt attention for 8 seconds.

Allow me to put on my interweb nerd hat for a moment and say FAIL on this though:

web

So yep, they have a cool bit for web developers on the careers page. And when you click on that web development link to get more info?

Unterminated string

It’s quite apt, considering that dealing with quotes will be something that aspiring web developers will have to grasp pretty damn fast.

In conclusion: good cause, slightly dubious implementation. AreYouUpForIt.ie.

Introducing GaelTube

They’re young, they have a banjo moment, they have surprisingly good editing techniques, they are not afraid of the haters. They reached the #1 featured video in Ireland a couple of days ago. They are GaelTube, hear them roar!

Don’t miss the comments: They are a study of this great nation.

Wave Riders and The Plug

Tags: , ,

Wave Rider, the surfing documentary, may have done well at the Jameson Irish film festival, but we’re loving The Plug, a teen effort that delves deep into the existentialist in all of us. Quality work from the kids:

Dude, what happened to your hat?

And one more thing: Wave Riders doesn’t appear to have an entry on IMDB. Does that not mean it doesn’t exist?

Oh Yeah Music Project Belfast

Oh Yeah Music Project Belfast

What is the Oh Yeah Music Project?

It’s a perfectly simple plan. We find a huge building in the centre of Belfast, and we fill it with music makers and people with creative energy. We kit it out with a recording studio, rehearsal rooms, a performance area and loads of space for growing fresh ideas.

We do all this because Belfast lacks a dedicated music space. We appreciate that our best acts have prospered in difficult conditions. Snow Patrol also know this, and their active support has played a critical part in the process.

I love earnest well being projects like this. It’s as though cynicism is just inconsequential leaves blowing in inconsequential circles at the bottom of inconsequential forest paths. It’s as though sarcasm was never invented. It’s as though earnest teenagers who have found peers to relate to can nod along to the rhythm of a beat I no longer understand because I’m too old. You can all just rock the fuck on forever. They’re like gig-flyer graphic designers who are so on the edge that their frequent use of almost-pink or angry purple is a statement of their boldness, their individualism. Sure they’ll choose red, but then they’ll slide that hue dangerously towards the two hundred’s,adding an ambiguous purplocity in a surging challenge to the world which can either take their creativity on board or go and jump. Don’t worry, there’s no future oiling corporate wheels here. These are the freedom fighters; fighting against the desk job. Fighting for the earnest nodding of a thousand happy fans. Beautiful.
