University College Dublin made history today as the first Irish university ever to hold a lecture in the online virtual world Second Life, with Professor Mary Burke from the school of information and library studies who lectured to students from the virtual James Joyce library.

Yep. UCD is the latest institution to take the plunge into the funny-fantastic world of second life. Three things about Second Life I learned very quickly during the free trial:

1. Male avatars have to buy a penis with the in game money.
2. Female avatars often carry a penis around just in case and/or because they are undecided themselves.
3. Be sure to visit the furrys.

Seriously. This is the fucking future!

The Scientology Debate

Tags: ,

Back in November, The UCD Literary and Historical Society held a debate on scientology. They had a pretty impressive array of guests:

Prof. Stephen Kent - Scientology specialist of the Sociology Department, University of Alberta.
Gerard Ryan - Director and member of Church of Scientology Mission of Dublin Ltd.
John Duignan - Former Scientologist.
Mike Garde - Representative of Dialogue Ireland and anti-Scientology Campaigner.
Andreas Heldal-Lund - Founder of Xenu.net, an anti-Scientology website.

The great news is that they created recordings of the whole thing and it’s all available in mp3 format. Take a look: UCD Literary and Historical Society debate on Scientology.
