Labour wants your pro-Lisbon videos

The Labour Party wants students both 2nd and 3rd level to create short YouTube videos to engage the Irish public in learning about and supporting the Lisbon Treaty.

Students of all levels of familiarity with video production are encouraged to produce a one-minute short illustrating why they support the Lisbon Treaty.

Maybe we’ll finally get some pro Lisbon videos up on youtube, instead of the usual.

The prize is €1000, so it’s worth a go.

Did you know the data protection commissioner was running a competition on youtube? They won’t let us embed their instructions for the competition.

Check out this page on the data protection web site for more information.

My favourite entry that I’ve seen is John and 21st Century Privacy:

While entries like this:

are absolutely excellent, John and 21st Century Privacy wins hands down for me so far.

The entries are coming in, including this one:

A short drama highlighting some of the issues with social networking amongst young people in Ireland today

That’s right kids. Use Bebo enough and you could become giant walking computer screens like the above. And drink Bavaria. Like true superheroes.

By the standard of the videos I’m guessing some film schools have gotten wind of this jazz, which is great.

Anyway, a government agency doing something proactive to get the kids interested in an important issue? I’ll let everyone else come up with reasons why they suck ass. I think this rocks. Closing date is the 30th April, so still time to shoot your masterpiece.

Have you seen thebubble.ie ? It’s a video podcast by John Callaghan and Tim Duggan of Mercury Boy. They’re signed up to provide content to (get rid of the paywall) Ireland.com.

The videos are a mixed affair, but all of a high quality. One over site seems to be that it’s not possible to browse the videos chronologically as opposed to by category. Granted, there is an RSS feed and a blog available, but that’s not quite the same. Hopefully I’m just missing it.

Loads of well produced and interesting content if you root around.

Fair play to RTÉ on St. Patricks Day. It can’t be easy hoisting a camera in the face of the lovely public and asking them what they think on the one day where they are most likely to say something ridiculous. And they’ve gone the extra mile, with www.rte.ie/stpatricks, where you can view all their reports from all their parades around the country. -10 points for using real player, but hey at least they got the media up there.

The level of political comment filtering through to the parades was great to see, with floats of pharmacists beating up Mary Harney and several Taoiseach’s throwing brown envelopes into the crowds. It is funny too, how we all laugh along with it, and the man in charge ignores it all and keeps on trucking. Stall the Ball has some related pictures on this theme. (found via Captain Mulley.)

The Chancer has a Paddys day related caption competition today.

Fantastic photos of the better floats in the Dublin parade on this flickr photo set.
